During Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, festivities sugar skulls, or calaveras, are a well-known part of the celebration and can be seen decorating ofrendas (offerings) to represent the deceased. Today, sugar skulls have become a staple of Mexican culture and are present all year round in different motifs, but never stop being an essential item of Día de Muertos.
